Vanessa Beecroft is an international artist who uses many different media in her artistic vision. Paintings, video, live performances. The models of her shows are always women, sometimes models sometimes just ordinary women. Nothing is fast-paced during her performances but the thoughts of the audience run wild and fast. There is a lot to say about a naked body and at the same time nothing at all. We are born naked, the rest is all a drag right? In spite of this, through the ages these same naked bodies of ours provoked different reactions. I am from Italy like Vanessa and there, every corner you turn there is a naked statue or a painting from some illustrious artist portraying naked people. Even in the Sistine Chapel you can see Michelangelo’s naked models throughout the ceiling and millions of visitors stare at them every year. So what is so wrong with nakedness? Nothing from my point of view yet I am fascinated by the different beliefs that people hold. Well, Vanessa Beecroft challenges people beliefs with this live show. The audience is invited in the performance space, usually a museum where they are faced by a group of naked women standing still and staring at them. After a while the people who are dressed start to feel uncomfortable about being dressed in such a situation. Some feel the violence, some the pain of these women and some don’t understand it at all. Art is made to provoke thoughts and Vanessa’s art does just such a thing.
